A verdant hill station, it is rightly described as “the green paradise of Kerala”. Adorning the northern hills of Kerala, Wayanad is home to majestic trees and diverse wildlife, gurgling streams and breathtaking waterfalls, wonderful caves and outlandish rock formations. Also famous for its spices and handicrafts, there is something here for everyone’s tastes. The Edakkal caves with its prehistoric petroglyphs, the Kuruva islands in the middle of Kabani river, the Neelimala view point and the Meenmutty falls, the Banasurasagar dam, the Chembra peak, the Tholpetty wildlife sanctuary and the Pakshipathalam Bird Sanctuary are but a few of Wayanad’s not to be missed tourist attractions.
The Edakkal caves: Home to cave art thought to be from BC 6000, the edakkal caves have drawn the attention of archaeologists and students of history from world over. The trek through Ambukutty Mala to reach the edakkal caves is an experience to be enjoyed.
The Kuruva islands: Located in the middle of Kabani river, the Kuruva island is a natural paradise replete with diverse flora and fauna. It makes for a mesmerising retreat away from all the pollution and noises of the more developed areas
The Neelimala View point: Promising one of the most enthralling trekking experiences in Wayanad, Neelimala view point is a must visit for adventure aficionados. Amazing trails that cross some of the most picteresque landscapes of the western Ghats lead you to a breathtaking view point accentuated by the wonderful Meenmutty waterfalls
The Banasura Sagar Dam: A tourist hotspot, the Banasura Sagar is a photographer’s paradise. India’s largest earthern dam, enveloped in natural beauty, varied flora and fauna, majestic hills and beautiful waterfalls, a visit to the Banasura Sagar is a refreshing treat to the tired mind.
The Chembra peak: A trekker’s dream, Chembra peak is the highest peak in the Wayanad Hill Range, at a height of 6980 feet above sea level. An adventurous and thrilling climb is rewarded by a breathtaking panoramic view of the Banasura Sagar Dam and the tea plantations from high above.
Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary: Offering an unforgettable experience for wildlife lovers, Tholpetty Wildlife sanctuary’s ‘Wildlife Safari’ is a most thrilling activity. Your path may be crossed by elephant herds, deers, langurs, the Indian bison, sometimes even panthers and tigers. You may also take advantage of their tree huts which are open for stay.
The Pakshipathalam Bird Sanctuary: Set within dense virgin forests, the Pakshipathalam Bird sanctuary is home to a number of rare and common birds. It was made famous by the presence of the “ edible nest swiftlet”, a bird which makes a nest exclsively of solidified saliva, and which is a main ingredient of “ bird’s nest soup”.
